5 races in one day? Puh-lease

5 races in one day. It’s happening. This weekend.

Ok, I say it like it’s no big deal but the reality is I need to be careful this weekend at the Carlsbad 5000 .

My first Carlsbad 5000 in 2010

Although this is a super fast (and fun) course, I cannot go all out at each race attempting PR after PR. Once it’s all said and done I will have completed 5, 5k races for a total of 15.5 miles. I’ll probably throw a few cool down in after so maybe complete the day around 17-18 total. We’ll see how things go.

So what is my plan? Do I have to have one? Ok, sure.

The goal is to run the first couple races around a 10k pace. The competitor in me will want to push hard so I am really going to need to make like Ice Cube and check myself. The third race I will be running with my brother Joe

He is coming off of some nasty shin splints so our run will be fun (can you say awesome race photos) and fingers and toes crossed that he will stay injury free.

The 4th race is my age group (women 30-39) and I am going to test my fitness in this race. Unless my body says otherwise I want to see where my legs are at. My SIL (pictured above) will also be running that race! Yes!

The last race of the day will be with the youngsters (29 and under) and that will be more of a chill race. If my little sis runs I’ll stick with her. If not I could get a wild hair up my butt and run fast. Doubtful but you never know. This IS my last race as a 32-year-old so I may have to go out with a bang.

So what is the purpose of running all 5 races? Just to do it. I’ll get a tech long sleeve, a couple of medals and will break up a planned long run. This is one of the most fun races of the year (for me) so why not push myself? My family runs this 5k event year after year and we have a blast doing it. Plus I’ll get to feel like I am at the Olympics watching the elite races at the end of the day.

If you are in SoCal and are looking for a 5k (or want to do the all day 25k) come do it! There is race weekend registration and is a PR course for most peeps.

My sweet tooth has been out of control again this week. Arggghhhhh. I am blaming  it on post race recovery needs. HA!

  1. I wish I was down there to run with you guys. So much fun! My sweet tooth too, I have been trying to feed it with carmel coffe and flavored tea…it’s not working. 🙂 Good luck, I can’t wait to hear how you do.

    1. Gracias amiga! I can’t wait- I love this race. Last year I had to bow out because my foot was injured. Praying it stays healthy all day!! I had me a hot fudge sundae on Thursday and it did wonders! Eat desert 🙂

  2. It’s so great to have your family participate! I have a 10 miler on the agenda. Breaking it up would have been a good idea. But I can’t make the trip down to Carlsbad with other plans we have going on. Good luck! Can’t wait to hear how it goes!

  3. Thanks for the shout out! I wish I could bust out 5 min. miles and with a jogging stroller. I am hoping for a post baby PR though! The 5 races sounds tough, but I am sure you will rock it! Maybe next year I will be ready for that. Hopefully I spot you at CBad so I can cheer you on!

    1. Yes, you would crush 5 races. I, on the other hand, need to be careful. My body loves to be injured and Sarah (OUAL) might kill me if I am hurt before Ragnar. Hope yo see you on Sunday!

  4. This sounds like so much.. and even more fun with your family. You run like the wind little lady..look forward to seeing how your legs fare…sure you will smoke it. I am moving back to SoCal from DC this summer might have to try this one next year.

  5. My sweet tooth is always out of control. Have you seen this children’s book called “sweet tooth” or something like that and how the kid has to pull his angry, sugar-craving tooth out at what point? I wish it was that easy!

    Have fun this weekend!

  6. This is awesome! So glad I stopped by! I just read your last recap but this one will be one of my favs to read. I couldn’t imagine doing that. Sounds so fun!

    Have a great weekend!!!!!

  7. Hey-question: Any suggestions for dealing with/preventing nasty shin splints!?!? I love to run (jog) and would love to do more but any time I get going, I end up getting shin splints! Just curious if you had any advice or suggestions!!?! Thanks!

    1. Aw man! My brother is just recovering from them. Have you been fitted for shoes?! They can be the culprit. Or increasing mileage/pace too quickly. If you have the stick start to roll them, use ice, no hills until the pain is gone. Rest will take them away but I know that’s hard to do!! Sending you speedy recovery vibes!

      1. I have heard that compression socks may help…do you know if there is any truth to that!?!? I just ordered a pair to try!?!? I don’t have a stick so maybe I should get that also…and I will try icing. Thanks for the response! I may need to switch shoes too! THANK YOU!!!

      2. Yes, I love compression socks!! I have been known to wear compression shorts and socks to bed. I don’t know if they help while running, but for recovery I swear by em!

  8. Loving Ice Cube line. Getting old school and probably confuddling your early 20’s readers.

I’ll see you there for the 30-39 race. I need to get a long run in myself, so now I see why you would do the all day 25K. But it would be too risky for me not to get wrapped up in the everyone else going fast. I’ll have to do a crapload of miles after my race. Thinking 15 or 16 total.

  9. I hope I’m running as fast as you when I’m 32! Did you have dark brown hair way back when? We might need a hair color trip down memory lane 🙂 Best of luck to you this weekend!

    1. So in 2010 I died my hair dark dark brown!! It’s naturally a dishwater color so I go from brunette to blonde often. I just can’t decide which way I like it better 🙂 Maybe a post down memory lane would be good- if nothing else it will give you all a good laugh!!
